5 Tips on Being More Productive

It seems that everyone I speak to these days is busier now than ever. When I ask someone, "How are you", the typical response I get is "I'm busy" or "too much to do and not enough time". We seem to be living in an era where our "to-do" list never gets "ta-done".

I've put together 5 simple tips you can do to be more productive- starting right now!

1. Stop Planning and Start Doing: We spend endless amounts of hours planning, strategizing and carefully going over our plan/list. Eventually, you will need to "jump" and do SOMETHING. So stop wasting your time over-planning. Plan your work and then work your plan. Once done, see what worked, what didn't, course correct and move on.

2. Don't say yes to every request: For some, we have a very hard time saying no. We take on more than we can handle. We feel a sense of obligation to say yes (when we really want to say no) as we don't want to be seen as a non-team player. Yet, we are working longer days, taking our work home and are constantly stressed with too much to do. Start saying no. If's it's not a core responsibility or one of your Core Values, then maybe you should not take it on. Don't get me wrong, if its part of your job description and one of your responsibilities, then of course- "get- er done" with and passion and zeal. If not, then "let-er go and say no".

3. Don't be a Perfectionist: " Progression is better than Perfection". That presentation is never going to be perfect. Yet, we agonize over it, rewrite it, tweak it and then sometimes we even scrap it altogether and start all over again. No one is perfect- I have yet to meet the perfect person. We will all make mistakes. Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook says:" Done is better than perfect". Do your best and let life do the rest.

4. Get everything out of your head: "Don't think it- ink it". write it down, carry a journal with you. We are being pulled in 20 different directions each day. If you don't have a plan for your day, then the day will run you. Try this: Before you go to bed at night, have a notebook by your bed. Write down everything you are grateful for, then write down what major tasks need to be completed the next day- no more than 2-3 points. Then go to bed. You'll wake up with a clearer sense of purpose and will sleep better. Just try it and let me know how it worked out for you.

5. Review and Measure your Accomplishments: as Peter Drucker once said:" What gets measured, gets improved". You need to keep track of your activity. In my work as an EOS Implementer, one of the 6 Key Components of any business is Data: this means cutting through all the feelings, personalities, opinions and egos and boiling the organization down to a handful of objective numbers that gives them an absolute pulse on where things are. Without the Data, you cannot see how you are doing and are flying blindly.
